Life, Interrupted
We don’t enjoy being interrupted. A sudden request, a ringing phone, a delay when we’re already behind - these moments frustrate us. We build routines, set plans, and find comfort in having order. So when things veer off course, our instinct is to resist. But disruptions are part of life, and perhaps even places where grace begins to surface. If we’re attentive, some of the most meaningful encounters arrive unannounced.
In the Gospels, Jesus was often approached mid-journey. A Roman centurion appealed to him for his servant’s healing. Ten lepers called out while he was travelling toward Jerusalem. Martha sent word that her brother was dying. These weren’t planned. Yet he paused. He didn’t dismiss them or hurry on. What looked like interruptions became settings where mercy unfolded. They weren’t obstacles to his mission, they were the mission.
At times, it’s not others but God who unsettles our rhythm. A quiet prompting. An unexpected encounter. A stranger needing help while we’re preoccupied. These may be his way of entering our day - gently, persistently, without fanfare. But if we’re too focused on tasks or timing, we may miss him altogether. Life will be disrupted. The question is whether we treat these moments as interference or invitation. One keeps us guarded. The other opens the door to grace.
